What a year visiting 50 schools in 2016!
WHAT A YEAR! ANDREW FISHTAIL FISHER VISITED 50 HIGH SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT 2016. HERE’S SOME OF HIS MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS & THOUGHTS ABOUT COURAGE, THE FUTURE AND ADVICE FOR YOUNG AUSTRALIANS.
Why is it important to speak about courage and decision making to high school students?
Too often who we become has more to do with others or the circumstance or environment we grow up in than what we really want. I was lucky when I was young to get through without ending up in huge trouble and so you want to give back to others.
What issues do you think young Australians in high school face as you have met countless young people this year?
The biggest issues are around young people being able to make decisions for themselves. Also the influence of their peers and the media has never been more severe. Young people are taking risks and feeling pressure to conform.
What was one of the most memorable moments during your school visits this year?
One of the most memorable moments was speaking at a Melbourne School where the teachers were suspicious about what our agenda might be, and yet by the end of the session they asked the year 10 student to come up on stage and get a group photo with me. It was an incredible day!
What would you say to a high school student who is going through a rough time and struggling to make courageous decisions?
In racing you get into trouble if you are always looking in the revision mirror. You have to look forward and concentrate on what is coming up…..you also don’t just look at what is directly in front of you. Instead you are looking further ahead so you have more time to react. I believe the same is important for teenagers, that they don’t just think about today but lift their horizons and think about the future.
How will the decision you make today impact your life? Next month? Next year even 5? 10? or 15 years? It’s an incredibly important perspective for young people to consider.
What’s your dreams / plans for Life Choices Foundation next year?
We are excited to be expanding the program bringing on a fantastic new female presenter! She has a real heart for the struggles young people are facing, as they navigate what can be difficult and complex times. We are very excited for 2017.
